Nigeria national student housing programme

Overview

The Nigerian Federal Government has initiated the National Student Housing Programme (NASHP) to combat severe accommodation shortages in tertiary institutions. Through Family Homes Funds Limited (FHFL), the programme aims to provide 38,400 bed spaces across 24 institutions, including universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

Currently, less than 15 per cent of Nigeria’s more than 2.1 million public tertiary students are accommodated on campus. The initiative utilizes a public-private partnership involving FHFL, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), and the Student Housing Company (SHC).

Two projects have been completed: a 1,600-bed hostel at Akwa Ibom State University and a facility at the College of Education in Warri, Delta State. Both facilities include en-suite rooms, study areas, and cafeterias. Construction is ongoing at eight additional institutions, with further projects expected to commence before the end of 2026.
