Efforts to address nutrition in Nigeria have moved from localized appeals to national-level policy declarations. In Imo State, UNICEF urged local government executives to allocate monthly funds toward child nutrition and Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation (MMS) to improve maternal and child health. Following leadership exchanges in Ethiopia, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum subsequently declared a nationwide nutrition emergency. This led to the establishment of a National Nutrition Intervention Fund to support the ‘Nutrition 774 Initiative’ across all local government areas. This national movement builds upon a Nutrition Compact signed in February 2025 by federal, state, and local government tiers. In Gombe State, UNICEF delivered 11,580 cartons of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) to treat severe acute malnutrition. This procurement was supported by N500m in counterpart funding from the Gombe State Government, which was matched by an equal sum through the Child Nutrition Fund. To ensure accountability, the state established a committee to prevent the diversion or misuse of supplies, emphasizing that RUTF must be used strictly according to medical protocols.
