Nigeria Police Force retirement legal dispute

A legal dispute regarding the retirement and reinstatement of senior officers in the Nigeria Police Force has led to significant judicial intervention.

The conflict originated from a January 2025 decision by the Police Service Commission to compulsorily retire 455 officers from Cadet ASP Courses 18, 19, and 20. Although a previous court ruling nullified these retirements and ordered their reinstatement, the National Industrial Court in Abuja issued an interim injunction on September 22, 2026, to halt the reinstatement process. This injunction, following a suit by the Advocacy for Human Rights and Cultural Values for Development Initiatives, requires all parties to maintain the status quo.

In response to these legal developments, the Nigeria Police Force issued a nationwide directive via the Force Headquarters in Abuja. The order, marked ‘M/IMMEDIATE’, mandates that personnel who have completed 35 years of service vacate their posts. Commissioners of Police and various formation heads have been instructed to identify affected personnel and submit their details to headquarters.
