The Nigerian government has initiated several measures to improve the management and reliability of the national power sector. Initially, Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe announced plans to establish a national electricity complaints call centre. This initiative is designed to provide consumers with a direct channel for reporting service challenges and seeking redress, while also serving as a reporting mechanism to combat the vandalism of critical infrastructure like transformers and transmission towers. Following these administrative and security-focused plans, the federal government commenced construction of an ultra-modern National Control Centre in Osogbo, Osun State. This facility is intended to replace a 64-year-old center and will serve the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO). The new center aims to provide real-time monitoring of the national grid through integrated SCADA systems and advanced analytics, supporting both preventive maintenance and the integration of renewable energy. Vice President Kashim Shettima performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the facility, noting that reliable electricity is a cornerstone of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’. Minister Tegbe stated that the centre will utilize integrated Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), advanced analytics, and large-format displays to provide real-time visibility across the national grid. This infrastructure is intended to reduce avoidable outages and enhance Nigeria’s coordination within the West African Power Pool through improved physical and cybersecurity.
