Nigeria is expanding its renewable energy infrastructure and investment through new national projects and dedicated funding. The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) initiated the second phase of the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP), focusing on solar energy, mini-hydropower, and off-grid solutions in Northern Nigeria. This phase represents a transition from the first phase of the NIPP, which primarily utilized fossil fuels like gas. Following these infrastructure developments, the Nigeria Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) Fund was commercially launched with $300 million. Announced on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, the fund marks a transition from its structuring phase to the active deployment of capital. Managed by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and Africa50, with support from the World Bank, the fund aims to deploy capital into mini-grids and standalone solar systems to increase electricity access for underserved communities and businesses. The initiative aligns with Mission 300, a continental program targeting electricity connections for 300 million people across Africa by 2030. To mitigate investment risks, such as irregular household incomes and foreign currency equipment costs, the World Bank provided an initial $25 million contribution through the International Development Association (IDA).
