Overview

Tensions between Nigeria and South Africa have escalated following reports of xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks against Nigerians living in South Africa.

Initially, Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima addressed the issue during an African Union summit in Angola, stating that Nigeria would no longer tolerate the “dehumanisation or mistreatment” of its citizens. While emphasizing a commitment to peaceful dialogue, Shettima urged South African authorities to protect lives and uphold human dignity during immigration enforcement.

Following continued reports of violence, intimidation, and property destruction, the Nigerian National Assembly has taken more formal action. The legislature announced a suspension of all official visits to South Africa and a boycott of all South African-hosted legislative activities, including both physical and virtual conferences. Lawmakers cited the ongoing displacement and injury of Nigerians as the primary reason for the boycott, noting that previous appeals for South African authorities to prosecute culprits have not resolved the issue.
