Nigeria teacher professionalisation and licensing

Overview

The Nigerian government has launched the Accelerated Teacher Professionalisation Pathway (ATPP), an initiative designed to provide professional credentials and licensing to approximately 250,000 serving teachers in both public and private schools.

Managed by the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) and endorsed by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), the programme utilizes a blended learning model. It offers two distinct tracks: a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) for teachers holding non-education degrees and a Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) for those with National Diplomas. This approach aims to professionalize the workforce without removing educators from their classrooms.

Parallel to these reforms, the teaching profession faces internal challenges. In the Federal Capital Territory, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has protested new promotion policies implemented by the FCT Civil Service Commission. The union characterized a “vacancy precondition” for higher-level education officers as an “assault” on the profession that threatens career progression and teacher morale.
