The Nigerian aviation sector has recently focused on honoring industry pioneers and expanding academic capacity. The Nigeria Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHOF) officially unveiled its montage and Achievers’ compendium at Murtala Muhammed Airport 2 in Lagos, creating a repository to document the history of the nation’s aerospace sector. Following this unveiling, leadership recognition continued with the nomination of Engr. Farouk Ahmed Umar, Managing Director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), and pioneer Managing Director Ibrahim Usman Auyo for induction into the 2027 NAHOF. In addition to these honors, the sector is pursuing educational advancements. The African Aviation and Aerospace University (AAAU) in Abuja and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance aeronautical and space engineering capacity, including the establishment of a new faculty at AAAU and collaborative online distance learning initiatives. Recent developments have expanded this focus toward regional safety leadership and sustainable fuel capacity. In Abuja, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) hosted the 12th Commission Meeting of the Banjul Accord Group Accident Investigation Agency (BAGAIA). The summit, involving officials from The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Cape Verde, and Nigeria, addressed air accident investigation cooperation, uniform safety standards, and threats such as drone incursions. Furthermore, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has engaged with AAAU to develop technical expertise for a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) ecosystem. Discussions included a proposed ‘Training of Trainers’ programme designed to create subject-matter experts to support the sector’s practical implementation of SAF.
