Nigerian Bar Association internal and political developments

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has faced significant internal and external challenges. Following the 2026 national officers election, the organization dealt with turmoil after a coordinated cyberattack compromised its voting platform. This incident led to an abrupt halt in voting and raised concerns regarding data security and the disappearance of the Electoral Committee. Despite these issues, the NBA elected its first female president, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, a result that intensified regional tensions within the legal community.

Subsequently, the 66th NBA Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt served as a platform for intense political debate. Presidential contenders for the 2027 elections, including Omoyele Sowore, Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, and Adewale Adebayo, engaged in heated exchanges regarding Nigeria’s economic and security future. Key topics included the fuel subsidy, transportation infrastructure, and the necessity of decentralizing the national police structure. Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, supported the push for state police to address structural weaknesses in the current security architecture.

During the conference, Omoyele Sowore alleged that the Department of State Services (DSS) conducted illegal surveillance on him, claiming he discovered an electronic tracking device on a security vehicle used by his team. The NBA also issued an urgent call for intervention after delegates were stranded on the Oghara–Sapele Road due to truck obstructions. Additionally, the association faced criticism regarding the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu and received calls for Northern leaders to prioritize justice in political disputes.
