Healthcare workers across different regions of Nigeria have initiated various warning strikes driven by safety concerns and labor disputes. In Abeokuta, workers at the Federal Medical Centre commenced a 72-hour warning strike following a violent incident where a medical laboratory scientist was allegedly stabbed by a patient’s relative. Unions, including the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria, have demanded a thorough investigation, the prosecution of the assailant, and improved security measures within hospital units. Simultaneously, healthcare professionals in Kwara and Katsina states have launched seven-day warning strikes. In Kwara, doctors are protesting salary deductions and the non-implementation of medical salary structures. In Katsina, the Assembly of Healthcare Professionals is striking over demands for improved allowances and salary adjustments to align with federal standards. The strike in Katsina State has since been suspended. Following an intervention by Governor Dikko Radda and a meeting on October 16, the state government committed to reopening negotiations and establishing a Joint Technical Committee. This committee is tasked with reviewing hazard, call duty, and shift duty allowances, as well as addressing the “CONHESS 10 skipping issue” for qualified officers. The suspension took effect at midnight on October 18, with workers directed to resume full clinical and administrative services.
