Nigerian leadership calls for media accountability

Overview

Nigerian political and government leaders have issued calls for increased media accountability and professional scrutiny across various sectors of governance.

At the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference, leaders discussed the media’s role in democracy and the challenges of AI-generated misinformation. Presidential candidate Peter Obi urged editors to scrutinize politicians’ records to ensure issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections, while state governors emphasized the need for investigative reporting and government transparency.

Following these discussions, officials addressed the Senate Press Corps in Abuja, focusing on fiscal oversight. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu, encouraged journalists to investigate the constitutional processes and development rationales behind the national budget. Senate President Godswill Akpabio also called for higher standards of accuracy and professionalism to help safeguard the budget from unlawful insertions.
