Internal political tensions have emerged in Nigeria involving Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections. Initially, a rift developed between Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Progressive Governors Forum regarding a proposed ‘Rainbow Coalition.’ Wike proposed the arrangement to mobilize cross-party support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election. However, APC governors rejected the plan, arguing it could weaken the party and create divided loyalties. Recent developments show widespread opposition to the coalition across various state chapters. In Imo State, APC officials dismissed the proposal as having ‘little relevance,’ while spokespeople in Gombe suggested the APC does not require such an arrangement. Adding to the friction, some officials, including Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal, have urged Wike to formally defect to the APC if he is truly committed to supporting President Tinubu’s re-election. Critics within the APC, including the Deputy National Chairman, have argued that a politician cannot genuinely support the party at the presidential level while simultaneously backing opposition candidates for governorship and legislative seats. This dispute highlights growing internal tensions regarding the control of political structures and the strategic organization of support for the 2027 elections. Following these tensions, Isaac Fayose alleged that five APC governors are secretly providing financial support to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Fayose claimed this covert support is intended to prevent Wike from securing victories for the APC in the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State, alleging that funds have been offered to polling agents to prevent the rigging of election results. In Rivers State, Wike has moved to expand his ‘Rainbow Coalition’ by engaging ethnic nationalities and incorporating members from the Action Alliance (AA), APC, PDP, and Labour Party (LP).
