Nigerian security agencies have conducted several operations targeting the trafficking of illegal petroleum products and narcotics across various states. In late August, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) intercepted over 100,000 litres of illegally refined diesel in Ondo State, resulting in six arrests. Concurrently, the Nigerian Navy seized 500 litres of suspected illegal diesel and cannabis sativa in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State. By early September, police operations shifted focus toward narcotics. In Osun State, authorities arrested three men—Awo Omotayo, Abayomi Suleiman, and Oluwatayo Samuel—after discovering five bags of suspected Indian hemp concealed in an abandoned Toyota Sienna Space Bus along the Moro–Ife Road. During interrogation, Omotayo allegedly claimed he was hired by an individual known as ‘Baba Ibo’ to transport the consignment to Ogbomoso in Oyo State. In Akwa Ibom, intelligence-led raids in Uyo and Essien Udim led to the arrest of four suspects, including Inemesit Ekpeyong, Mandu John, Ubong John, and Ekemine John, following the recovery of large quantities of suspected Indian hemp. On September 8, the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Lugard intercepted a wooden boat carrying 71 kilograms of suspected cannabis along the River Niger in Kogi State. Three suspects were arrested during the operation, arrested, and the vessel was handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Lokoja. Commander Christian Ottah, Acting Executive Officer of NNS Lugard, noted that the operation highlights the importance of ‘inter-agency collaboration and timely intelligence’ in combating narcotics trafficking. Investigations into supply networks remain ongoing. In mid-September, police operations continued in Oyo and Akwa Ibom. In Ibadan, a 28-year-old suspect identified as Rilwan ‘M’ was arrested in the Apata area after officers recovered suspected Indian hemp and a white crystalline substance suspected to be methamphetamine. In Akwa Ibom, a raid on a suspected criminal hideout in Idu Uruan Village led to the arrest of Fortune Effiong and Comfort Effiong, alongside the recovery of substantial quantities of suspected Indian hemp and Cannabis sativa.
