Nigerian Senate legislative reforms
Overview
The Nigerian Senate has advanced several amendment bills aimed at institutional and sectoral reforms. In late October 2026, the Senate passed the second reading of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026. This legislation, sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, intends to improve the administration, coordination, and funding of public senior secondary education to address issues such as inadequate infrastructure and insufficient instructional materials.
During the same period, the Senate also passed the second reading of two other bills sponsored by Bamidele. One bill seeks to authorize the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria to award PhD degrees in clinical medicine, dentistry, and related fields to enhance research capacity. The second bill proposes amendments to the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) Act to ensure the agency’s institutional independence and operational autonomy by removing ministerial approval requirements for accident investigations.
