In celebration of World Teachers’ Day 2026, the Nigerian Federal Government and various state governments have introduced several incentive and welfare programs for educators. The Federal Government announced a program to reward exceptional teachers with cars and laptops, utilizing an automated and digitized selection process to ensure transparency. Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, confirmed that the selection process for the 2026 awards has been digitized to enhance “transparency, accountability, and efficiency.” The celebrations focused on five pillars: innovation, mobility, Artificial Intelligence, inclusion, and professional excellence. The festivities included a symposium and a march-past, with the top three teachers receiving cars as honors. At the state level, various governors implemented diverse welfare measures. Ekiti State provided N70.5 million in cash prizes, while Abia State established a N1 billion Teachers Appreciation Fund and increased the retirement age from 60 to 65. Kano State approved promotions for nearly 19,000 staff members, and Kwara State distributed N120 million in prizes, including a plan to purchase Dangote Refinery shares for outstanding female teachers.
