Nigerian university global ranking trends
Overview
The 2027 Times Higher Education (THE) Nigeria University Rankings identified 29 institutions as the highest-ranked in the country, an increase from the 24 universities listed in the 2026 edition. Top performers including Covenant University, the University of Ibadan, and the University of Lagos secured positions within the 801–1000 global band. Other institutions, such as Ahmadu Bello University and the University of Ilorin, advanced into the 1001–1200 band.
Professor Peter Okebukola, Chairman of the Nigerian Tertiary Education and Research Analysis Committee (NiTERAC), projected that Nigerian universities are expected to see “unprecedented improvements” in international rankings. This progress is attributed to increased competition and a mandatory national ranking exercise introduced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, in September 2026. Furthermore, an expanding research footprint and increased academic registration on platforms like Google Scholar are expected to bolster the country’s citation data, a critical metric for global assessments.
