Tuomas Holopainen, the primary songwriter for the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish, has provided updates regarding the group’s upcoming eleventh studio album during their current hiatus from live performances. Initially, Holopainen reported having written six new songs and indicated that the band had “reserved things” for 2027, though he suggested a return to touring was unlikely until at least the following year. By late August, Holopainen updated the progress, stating he had written seven songs and that the band is scheduled to enter the studio to begin recording in May 2027. He noted that the break from touring has been beneficial for the creative process and suggested that a return to the live stage would be more plausible in 2028 once the new album is finished. In August 2026, the band announced plans to celebrate its 30th anniversary with a retrospective collection titled ‘The Greatest 30 Years On Earth’. Scheduled for release on December 11 via Nuclear Blast Records, the collection will include rare audio and visual recordings, such as live performances from Amsterdam and Kitee, alongside a documentary focused on Holopainen. Additionally, Holopainen revealed he is finalizing a solo album, which is expected to be ready by spring 2027 following orchestral recordings in London. Regarding the band's eleventh album, Holopainen reiterated that seven songs are written and noted that the creative process is progressing well, stating that songs are coming together ‘like never before’.
