Nintendo’s Switch 2 continues to show strong software momentum despite fluctuations in hardware sales. In its first-quarter fiscal report for 2026-2027, Nintendo reported a 151% jump in operating profit to 143 billion yen, driven by a 107.4% surge in IP-related revenue following the success of ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’. While Switch 2 console sales fell 34.4% year-over-year to 3.82 million units, the total installed base has reached approximately 23.7 million units. To manage rising component costs, Nintendo implemented global price hikes effective 1 September 2026. During the ‘The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct’ on 8 September 2026, Nintendo announced a remake of ‘The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’ for the Nintendo Switch 2, scheduled for release on 5 November 2026. Producer Eiji Aonuma showcased gameplay featuring revamped visuals, an orchestrated soundtrack, and fully voiced dialogue. The remake will utilize the Switch 2 microphone to allow players to play or hum melodies, though it will intentionally retain loading screens between regions to preserve the original experience. The new version is noted for a “darker, more realistic visual style” compared to the original’s aesthetics. New gameplay details include a manual jump mechanic for Link, potentially supported by the ‘Roc’s Feather’ item. To celebrate the franchise milestone, Nintendo will release a Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition Nintendo Switch 2 on 29 October 2026, featuring a gold and metallic green console with Triforce-inspired designs on the dock and Joy-Con 2 controllers. This special edition will not include the Ocarina of Time game, but a limited edition Pro Controller 2 will be released alongside the console. Furthermore, a live-action Zelda film directed by Wes Ball and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing is set for 30 April 2027.
