Nio has expanded its electric vehicle infrastructure through technological deployment and strategic corporate partnerships. The company launched the world’s first zero-carbon, off-grid battery swap station in the Gobi Desert in Xinjiang, China, utilizing solar energy and storage hardware from Longi Green Energy Technology. To address industrial overcapacity and a shrinking domestic vehicle market—where sales fell 20.8% during the first eight months of 2026 compared to the previous year—Nio market, Nio and Geely have moved to consolidate their battery charging and swapping operations. Under this agreement, a Geely subsidiary will acquire a 30% stake in NIO Power (NIO Energy Investment). This transaction involves Geely contributing its stake in Yiyi Internet Technology (Chongqing) and approximately RMB 640 million in cash, valuing NIO Power at roughly RMB 16 billion. Geely’s ownership may range between 20% and 34% based on operational milestones. Following the transaction, NIO China will retain a 63.6% interest in NIO Power. In a reciprocal move, Nio will acquire a 10% stake in Geely’s Haohan Energy Technology Co., Ltd. The partnership aims to standardize battery-swapping technology and integrate charging networks to reduce redundant investment. Geely CEO Andy An Conghui emphasized that charging networks should function as public infrastructure that is “built collectively, used openly, and interconnected across systems to maximize value for users.” Under the strengthened collaboration, Geely will develop passenger vehicles that support battery swapping systems, while NIO Power provides the necessary services. NIO Power also plans to optimize its network to support commercial fleets and the development of Yiyi Power’s commercial mobility business. Nio aims to expand its battery-swapping network to 10,000 stations by 2030, while Geely plans to build over 22,000 charging stations and 100,000 charging guns by the end of 2027. In the third quarter of 2026, Nio reported a 25.4% year-on-year increase in vehicle deliveries, totaling 109,178 units. For the first nine months of 2026, total deliveries reached 300,301 vehicles, a 49.2% increase compared to the previous year.
