Following a landslide in January that damaged the historic center of Niscemi, Sicily, a new fissure opened on the hillside in early September. Mayor Massimiliano Conti stated that securing the hillside is the “absolute priority” before reconstruction can occur. Institutional responses included planned visits from Commissioner Fabio Ciciliano, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, and Minister Adolfo Urso to assess interventions and support the local population. By September 8, authorities announced confirmed a 150 million euro plan to manage the crisis. The budget is divided equally between 75 million euros for slope stabilization and safety works, and 75 million euros for the demolition of unrecoverable buildings and resident compensation. Commissioner Ciciliano noted that while new fissures have appeared, they are a “normal phenomenon” in the designated red zone and do not pose an immediate risk. Authorities are moving toward approving feasibility documents to initiate the bidding process for safety works.
