A passenger on the North Jersey Coast Line accidentally lost a gold wedding band after flushing it down a train toilet. The incident occurred because the passenger had removed the ring to wipe soap from her hands due to a lack of running water in the restroom. NJ Transit maintenance workers successfully recovered the jewelry by identifying the specific rail car and transporting it to the Meadowlands Maintenance Complex. Because the train car toilets empty into 50-gallon holding tanks, crews were able to retrieve the ring from the tank. It was later clarified that the recovered item was an antique wedding ring dating back to 1905. The successful retrieval and return of the ring to the passenger has prompted local discussion regarding the lengths to which individuals might go to recover lost items, such as jewelry, phones, or keys, dropped in toilets.
