NLSIU documentary screening controversy

A controversy emerged at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bengaluru regarding a scheduled screening of the documentary ‘Prisoner No. 626710 is Present’. Directed by Lalit Vachani, the film focuses on activist Umar Khalid, who has been held without trial under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act since 2020 following his arrest in connection with the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) formally requested the university cancel the event, alleging it serves as ‘political propaganda’ and attempts to glorify civil unrest. The organization argued that academic institutions should prioritize national integrity over such screenings.

The situation escalated into a political dispute in Karnataka following remarks by Congress leader B. K. Hariprasad, who described Khalid as a ‘nationalist’. This prompted strong condemnation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which accused the Congress of appeasement politics and supporting individuals accused of anti-national activities.

In response, leaders from the Congress and the Samajwadi Party have defended Khalid, questioning the delay in his trial despite years in custody and advocating for academic freedom. Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge and Samajwadi Party leader ST Hasan have specifically questioned why the trial has not proceeded and asserted Khalid’s commitment to national integration. Due to these tensions, the university has postponed the event, citing ‘logistical and security considerations’.
