Nordic stock market integration proposal

The industrial alliance Nordic Compass is exploring a proposal to merge the national stock exchanges of Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland into a single regional market. The initiative seeks to harmonize regulatory frameworks and improve capital raising opportunities to bolster competitiveness in sectors such as deep tech, defense, and energy.

Christian Clausen, president of the Nordic Compass capital markets branch, noted that the project is currently in an exploratory phase focused on analyzing liquidity and other initiatives. While no formal agreements have been reached, the alliance—which includes organizations such as Ericsson, Nokia, and the Novo Nordisk Foundation—expects to present a proposal regarding capital markets during a summit in Gothenburg in November.

Øivind Amundsen, head of Oslo Børs, has expressed support for the initiative, stating he is positive about exploring a ‘seamless Nordic market.’ However, the proposal faces structural challenges, as Nasdaq controls most Nordic exchanges while Euronext owns Oslo Børs. A successful integration would require cooperation between these major players and trade settlement entities like Euroclear.
