North African oil and gas production expansion

Overview

Libya and its neighbors are pursuing initiatives to expand hydrocarbon production and exploration. In August 2026, Libya and Tunisia launched a joint bidding round for oil and gas exploration in the Gabès-Tripoli basin, targeting reserves estimated at 1.6 billion barrels of oil and 3.1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. This offshore tender process is set to run through late 2026.

By September 2026, regional efforts to increase natural gas capacity expanded to include Egypt. The Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) set a target to add 330 million cubic feet per day of domestic production by the end of 2026, supported by the settlement of $6.1 billion in arrears to international partners. Simultaneously, Libya announced plans to raise its natural gas production to at least 4 billion cubic feet per day within three to five years, utilizing projects such as the Sabratha Compression Project to support offshore fields and export volumes.
