North American fentanyl overdose surge

In mid‑July 2026, Montreal's public health department reported a dramatic rise in overdoses involving fentanyl and the even more potent synthetic opioid carfentanil, with paramedics administering naloxone over 925 times since the start of the year—25 times the total for all of 2025—and eight carfentanil‑related deaths recorded since early April. The department urged drug users to avoid using alone, to carry naloxone and to seek immediate help if someone shows signs of overdose.

Two weeks later, U.S. law‑enforcement agencies issued alerts about counterfeit pills seized in Colorado, Utah and Ohio that were laced with lethal mixes of fentanyl, carfentanil, heroin and other synthetic opioid analogs. The pills, described as blue‑green, were linked to a growing trend of polydrug mixtures that also include veterinary sedatives such as medetomidine and xylazine. Federal and state officials warned the public that any non‑prescribed pill could be deadly, urged the use of naloxone, and highlighted the need for heightened community awareness across the affected regions.
