North American forest ecosystem shifts from wildfires

Overview

Wildfire activity is driving a permanent ecological transformation across North America, specifically within Western conifer forests. Researchers warn that high-intensity blazes and a warming climate could cause up to 40 percent of these forests to convert into shrubland and poison oak by the year 2100.

This transition poses significant environmental risks, including accelerated snowmelt which may exacerbate water shortages in regions dependent on snowmelt for their supply. In British Columbia, experts attribute increased vulnerability to a “fire deficit” caused by decades of aggressive fire suppression and the loss of Indigenous cultural burning practices, leaving forests dense with fuel.

Recent research published in Science Advances, analyzing 3,500 wildfires that burned over 100 million acres between 2012 and 2023, suggests that fast-moving, intense fires are actively hindering forest recovery. The study found that higher fire spread rates correlate with increased intensity and higher rates of total tree mortality. As fires move faster, the distance to surviving trees capable of reseeding the area increases.

Professor Jonathan Coop noted that warmer and drier conditions driven by climate change are making ecosystems less habitable for tree species. Severe fires can accelerate the transition of these landscapes into shrublands if they leave large areas without living trees to provide seeds for repopulation. To mitigate these risks, industry representatives continue to call for expanded thinning and controlled burns to protect communities and ecosystems.
