Municipalities across North America are organizing community outreach and training programs to observe Overdose Awareness Month and International Overdose Awareness Day. In Comox Valley, the Village Clinic and local organizations planned an event at the Comox Valley Art Gallery Plaza featuring naloxone training, musical performances, and ceremonies led by Indigenous elders. The initiative follows a period in 2025 where paramedics responded to 490 overdose-related calls in the region. In the United States, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, implemented programs involving free naloxone distribution and response training in partnership with local health organizations, following reports of over 1,000 overdose deaths in the state during 2024. In Maple Ridge, British Columbia, the group Storm organized the ‘Dine With Us’ event at Memorial Peace Park to provide education on recovery and treatment services while utilizing the Purple Chair Project to symbolize those lost to the toxic drug crisis. Recent preparations for International Overdose Awareness Day include events in Fall River and Chester County, Pennsylvania. In Fall River, Recover Fall River will host a vigil at The Meadows Heritage State Park featuring a dove release, a memorial video, and a performance by Skyler Ray, while providing Narcan to attendees. In Chester County, the Department of Drug and Alcohol Services will hold a ‘Night of Light’ at the Historic Courthouse, featuring a luminary ceremony and 57 flags to honor those lost to accidental overdoses in the previous year. Officials noted that overdose fatalities in the county have declined by 20% over the last four years, a trend attributed to multi-departmental cooperation and community partnerships.
