North Carolina gas tax suspension enacted
Overview
Governor Josh Stein has signed House Bill 3, known as the ‘Relief at the Pump Act’, into law, officially suspending North Carolina’s 41-cent state gas tax through November 30, 2026. The legislation applies to gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuels. While the tax is collected when fuel is sold to retailers, savings are expected to reach consumers as stations receive new, untaxed inventory.
In addition to the tax suspension, the law waives penalties for the highway use of red-dyed diesel through the end of 2026 to assist farmers and the logging industry. To address projected revenue losses for transportation infrastructure, the state will utilize funds from the Stabilization and Inflation Reserve account. The North Carolina Department of Transportation estimates the pause could result in a $225 million loss in state transportation funding.
To ensure savings are passed on to drivers, Attorney General Jeff Jackson has launched ‘NC Fuel Check’, a consumer-reporting tool. This initiative allows citizens to report gas stations suspected of unfair business practices or inflated pricing. Jackson noted that businesses found in violation could face penalties of up to $5,000 per transaction. While savings may not be immediate due to existing inventory, officials expect the impact to be visible within a week as new shipments arrive.
Democratic leaders have criticized the legislation, characterizing it as a “temporary political measure” and questioning the timing of the special session used to pass the bill.
