Overview

In August 2026, North Macedonia held commemorations marking the 25th anniversary of two significant massacres occurring during the 2001 armed conflict.

On August 7, officials and national leaders, including Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski and President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, observed the anniversary of the Karapalak massacre. This event involved an ambush by the NLA that killed ten Macedonian security force reservists from Prilep. While leaders described the event as a “common wound,” some survivors and political groups expressed dissatisfaction regarding a perceived lack of legal accountability and insufficient state support for medical and social needs.

On August 10, ceremonies were held to honor the victims of the Ljubotenski Bacila massacre, where an army transport vehicle struck landmines, killing eight reserve army members. Delegations from the Ministry of Defense and the Army General Staff participated in tributes across multiple locations, including Gjorce Petrov and Volkovo. These ceremonies also honored Aco Angelovski, a police officer killed in 2000.
