In late July 2026, North Macedonia’s foreign trade minister Timco Mucunski defended the country’s EU accession negotiations on social media, rebuking former foreign minister Bujar Osmani for alleged distortions. He then met Spain’s state secretary for EU affairs, Fernando Mariano Sampedro Marcos, thanking Spain for its support and stressing that the accession process must be merit‑based, predictable, and equal for all candidates. By mid-August, Mucunski stated that the country is seeking a sustainable solution to begin negotiations, emphasizing the need for either formal guarantees from EU institutions or constitutional amendments with deferred application. He also called for international legal reciprocity regarding human rights. On August 20, during the Ambassadorial Council in Skopje, Mucunski outlined strategic priorities including the protection of national interests, economic diplomacy, and support for citizens abroad, noting efforts to strengthen trade with the U.S., India, and Arab Gulf countries. However, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski expressed frustration with the EU, claiming the country has been “betrayed and lied to” by Brussels bureaucrats despite making significant concessions, such as altering its flag, currency, and constitution. An August 25 interview with Breitbart News saw Mickoski stating that EU membership is a secondary goal following a strategic partnership with the United States. This stance drew criticism from the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM), which accused him of failing to complete reforms.
