North Macedonia has reported significant developments regarding its national budget and sectoral spending. Through August, budget revenues reached 230.6 billion denars, an 8 percent increase over the previous year. This growth was year, driven by rises in corporate income tax, personal income tax, VAT, and import duties. In the agricultural sector, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy has distributed approximately 6.5 billion denars in subsidies, representing roughly 90 percent of the planned 7.295 billion denars for the 2026 program. These payments have targeted various groups, including cattle breeders, crop farmers, and horticultural producers. The ministry is also working to resolve outstanding debts from 2020 and has implemented new controls, such as satellite imagery and field inspections, to prevent fraud. More recently, the government announced plans for a second budget revision due to a 7 billion denar deficit in the state treasury. Officials attributed this deficit to reductions in excise tax and VAT on petroleum derivatives. Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski stated the revision aims to maintain economic stability. The deficit has drawn criticism from political and economic observers. Economist Borçe Trenkovski has called for “full transparency” regarding the reasons for the revision and how the deficit will be covered, suggesting a focus on expenditure efficiency. Meanwhile, LSDM deputy coordinator Fatmir Bytyqi attributed the deficit to “poor planning and low revenues” rather than changes in taxation.
