North Macedonia is implementing new technological measures to enhance public safety and institutional transparency. In late August, the Ministry of Internal Affairs expanded its ‘Safe City’ automated traffic system to include motorcycle speeding detection. By mid-September, the Customs Administration introduced body cameras at the Tabanovce, Blace, and Kyafasan border crossings, donated by the U.S. Department of Justice to prevent corruption. On September 25, Interior Minister Panče Toshkovski announced that the ‘Safe City’ intelligent system would begin practical implementation on October 12 in the Ohrid regional police sector, covering Ohrid, Struga, Kičevo, and Debar. Following technical checks and final testing, the cameras will be activated on roads within the Ohrid Regional Police Station jurisdiction to provide continuous traffic control and timely violation detection. Toshkovski noted that since the system’s nationwide introduction on February 1, traffic accident injuries have decreased by approximately 20 percent, resulting in 34 fewer fatalities compared to the same period last year. Additionally, cooperation with FRONTEX will expand to include the western border with Albania, with joint activities expected to begin by the end of the year or early next year. On October 2, Aleksandar Janev, Director of the Bureau for Public Security, announced the expansion of the ‘Safe City’ system to Prilep and Bitola. This project is currently in the documentation phase and will include over 40 monitoring points to assist in crime prevention and infrastructure protection. This expansion follows a major police operation targeting an organized criminal group involved in drug trafficking and economic crime. The investigation, which spanned Prilep, Skopje, and Struga, resulted in criminal complaints against 21 individuals and included searches at the residences of police officers in the Prilep Department for Internal Affairs. On October 9, Customs Administration Director Boban Nikolovski reported that the administration has prevented the entry of 246 illegal migrants since July 2024, primarily from Egypt, Sudan, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, and Syria. 2024.
