The Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources of North Macedonia is establishing an institutional framework to protect and certify the Macedonian ruby. This initiative involves a newly formed Commission working with the Geological Institute and the State Institute for Industrial Property to create a traceability system. Key components of the program include the issuance of an authenticity certificate, described as a ‘passport’ for the stone, to guarantee its origin and quality. The system also establishes a formal register of authorized producers and processors, monitors mineral movement, and sets strict standards for labeling and market presentation to prevent fraud and increase international market value. The Macedonian ruby, a raspberry-pink corundum variety found near Prilep and the Mariovo mountain regions, was officially protected as a national semi-precious stone in June. The government is moving toward a new phase of activities to launch the full certification and promotion system. Recent developments indicate the Ministry is advancing the protection and international promotion of the gemstone. It is noted as the only natural ruby in continental Europe that is processed locally.
