North Macedonia mining and environmental management
Overview
In North Macedonia, government authorities and environmental organizations have raised concerns regarding resource management and industrial pollution.
Minister of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources Sanya Bozhinovska announced the revocation of over 40 mineral resource exploitation concessions following the identification of irregularities. Concession fees were also increased by 100 percent to support municipal infrastructure. This move followed parliamentary inquiries into safety concerns regarding limestone mining transport on local roads.
Separately, environmental group Eco Svast warned that North Macedonia faces the potential loss of a €500,000 grant intended for the remediation of the Jugohrom wastewater treatment plant. The funds are required to address a landfill containing hexavalent chromium near Jeganovce, which poses a threat to the Rasce water spring. Current data suggests groundwater contamination levels in the area are up to 100,000 times higher than permitted values.
