North Northamptonshire Council education initiatives

In July 2026 the North Northamptonshire Council outlined a package of improvements to school transport, introducing clearer communication, operator feedback, new review questions to promote independence and a Personal Travel Budget trial that lets families fund journeys. At the same time the council reported record primary‑place allocations, with over 94% of reception applicants receiving a first‑choice school place and all Year 3 applicants offered a first‑preference place.

A few weeks later, in August 2026, the council proposed to extend its Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, which provides free meals and a range of sports, arts and educational activities for children aged 5‑16 during school holidays. The plan, funded by the UK Department for Education through at least the 2028/29 financial year, calls for a new two‑year contract after the current one ends in March 2027. The extension aims to continue supporting vulnerable pupils, including those on free school meals and those with special educational needs.

Together, these actions illustrate the council’s ongoing effort to enhance services for children and families, covering both everyday school logistics and extracurricular support during holidays.
