A widespread severe weather system moved into the northeastern United States in late July 2026. On July 21 the Storm Prediction Center warned of a massive thunderstorm complex that stretched from the Ohio Valley through the Mid‑Atlantic to the Northeast, placing parts of Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Connecticut under a tornado watch affecting roughly 32 million people. The system brought damaging winds, large hail, flash‑flood threats and, through the influence of Tropical Storm Bertha, added extra moisture that intensified rains. West Virginia declared a statewide emergency after historic flooding, and a heat wave was forecast for the central U.S. By July 27 the system remained active, prompting the SPC to issue Severe Thunderstorm Watch 525 for southeastern Pennsylvania, northern New Jersey, far‑southern New York and parts of Delaware, covering major population centers such as Philadelphia, Atlantic City and Wilmington and highlighting wind gusts up to 90 mph, hail up to 1.25 inches and rapid‑onset flash flooding. On July 28 the National Weather Service expanded coverage, placing a Severe Thunderstorm Watch over much of Maryland—including 15 counties and Baltimore City—and extending into parts of Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. The outlook called for damaging straight‑line winds, large hail, an isolated tornado threat and flash‑flood potential, especially in low‑lying areas, with the greatest risk between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. The watch underscored that the moisture‑laden system, still fueled by Tropical Storm Bertha, continued to produce severe weather across the Mid‑Atlantic as the outbreak progressed. Further NWS advisories on July 28 broadened the threat, adding severe thunderstorm watches for Maryland, northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., and large parts of Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey, with wind gusts of 60‑70 mph, hail up to one inch and isolated tornado potential.
