Tensions have escalated between Northern Ireland agricultural regulators and the farming community following a state-sanctioned cull of 51 cattle in Fivemiletown, Co. Tyrone. The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) conducted the operation to comply with a Court Deprivation Order involving a disqualified keeper linked to animal welfare and disposal offences. Agriculture Minister Andrew Muir defended the action, stating that the department was “unfortunately left with no reasonable alternative to comply with the court order, other than to euthanise the animals.” While the Minister noted that silencers were used to minimize public exposure, the Ulster Farmers' Union (UFU) criticized the methodology, arguing the cull was conducted in a manner too visible to the public. New details indicate the enforcement action became chaotic when the cattle panicked and scattered during the shooting. Although a local farmer attempted to intervene by offering to purchase the herd and provide transport, the animals could not be gathered. The incident led to hundreds of farmers protesting at Stormont.
