Northwestern University is preparing to debut its new, privately funded Ryan Field on October 2. The facility, which cost between $850 million and $875 million, is noted as the most expensive college football stadium ever built. The stadium's inaugural game will feature a matchup against Penn State. As the game approaches, Northwestern enters the matchup as 3-point underdogs to the Nittany Lions. While Penn State holds a 16-6 advantage in their 23 historical meetings, Northwestern won the most recent encounter in 2025 with a score of 22-21. Northwestern enters the matchup with a 2-1 record, while Penn State enters with a 3-1 record following a recent loss to Wisconsin. Head coach David Braun has described the new facility as “transformational for the football program and the university,” noting that the design focuses on acoustics and intimacy to provide a home-field advantage. The 35,000-capacity stadium represents a reduction from the previous stadium's 47,500 capacity. Features include AI checkout technology, various food options, and a 360-degree canopy roof designed to trap crowd noise. The stadium also includes a standing-only student section known as the ‘Wildcat Wall,’ which is modeled after European soccer supporter sections to mimic international atmospheres. The matchup is scheduled Wall.’ In a departure from tradition, the Northwestern University Marching Band (NUMB) will not perform its pregame routine on the field for Friday, October 2, the inaugural game. The Ryan Field Foundation stated the band will instead perform at 8 p.m. on FOX. the Great Chicago Food Festival to engage with fans. While the band will participate in halftime routines, the future of on-field pregame performances remains undecided. Pregame festivities for the Friday night game will include an F-16 flyover by the 122nd Fighter Wing of the Indiana Air National Guard and an American flag presentation by 100 community members.
