Norway Førdefjord mining waste dispute

Overview

The Norwegian Environment Agency has recommended that the government grant Nordic Mining a temporary permit to dump up to 4.5 million tons of mine waste in Førdefjorden over a three-year period. This recommendation follows a Supreme Court ruling that invalidated a previous permit for 170 million tons of waste. The Agency maintains the activity is acceptable under the Pollution Control Act.

The proposal has triggered significant political and environmental controversy. Environmental organizations, such as Naturvernforbundet and Natur og Ungdom, argue the dumping will damage vulnerable seabed fauna and have questioned the professional integrity of the Agency.

Politically, the Socialist Left Party (SV) has criticized the government, with leader Lars Haltbrekken suggesting the administration is prepared to “sacrifice the fjord for mining interests.” The SV has called for the Førdefjord case to be brought before the Control Committee. Broader debates in Norway have also emerged regarding whether the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy, and Equinor are exerting undue influence over climate policy at the expense of national climate preparedness.
