Norway-Hungary financial aid resumption

Overview

Norway has reached an agreement to resume financial aid to Hungary, ending a ten-year impasse that began in 2014. The suspension of funding during the 2014–2021 cycle was due to disagreements regarding the appointment of an independent entity to manage funds under the previous administration.

Following a political shift in Budapest under the leadership of Péter Magyar, Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide and Hungarian Finance Minister András Karmán signed a deal worth €254.1 million. This funding, part of the Norwegian and European Economic Area (EEA) grants program, is intended to support democratic reforms, including the rule of law, anti-corruption measures, press freedom, and good governance.

The current funding cycle is set to cover the period from 2021 to 2028, with payments potentially continuing until April 2031. Norway provides approximately 97% of the resources allocated to Budapest through the EEA mechanism.
