Norway moose reproduction and hunting research
Overview
Research conducted by the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) and the consultancy Faun has concluded that hunting during the moose rutting season does not negatively affect reproduction or calf health in Norway.
Analyzing data from over 200 municipalities between 1992 and 2023, researchers found no correlation between hunting timing and the observed decline in moose calf weight or the proportion of cows with calves. Interestingly, the study noted that these declines were most significant in areas where hunting during the rutting period was minimal or non-existent. Senior researcher Erling Johan Solberg stated, “We have not found anything to suggest that the timing of the hunt is linked to the changes in the number of calves and the weight of the calves,” suggesting that biological mating instincts tend to override disturbances caused by hunting.
