Norway student housing shortage

Norway is experiencing an acute shortage of student housing, with the waiting queue reaching 17,105 students—an increase of 921 compared to the previous year. The shortage is most severe in major cities such as Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, Tromsø, Ås, and Stavanger.

In response to the crisis, the Norwegian government has reaffirmed its goal to build an average of 3,000 new student homes annually. Officials have emphasized the need for faster building permits, the release of municipal land, and more affordable options. In Bergen, temporary measures have been implemented, including the establishment of two barracks in Møllendali providing 88 rooms to provide immediate relief.

Economic pressures, including high rental costs and rising food prices, are further complicating the situation. Data indicates an increasing number of students are living at home due to these costs. While the government maintains its long-term construction targets, student organizations and opposition politicians continue to describe the situation as a crisis, citing the significant gap between current supply and the number of homes required to ensure adequate residence for all students.
