Following his June 2026 sentencing to four years for two rapes and domestic violence, Marius Borg Høiby has been serving his detention under electronic house arrest at the royal Skaugum estate. While his legal team has appealed the conviction and sought early release, the arrangement allows him to move within a fenced area including the palace park and a pool, though he is strictly prohibited from using alcohol or drugs and must wear an ankle monitor. In early August, the Oslo District Court extended his pretrial detention for an additional four weeks, effective until 7 September. This extension followed a request from prosecutors citing a continued risk of recidivism. On 12 August, the Borgarting Court of Appeal upheld these restrictions, rejecting an appeal by Høiby to end his pretrial detention via an electronic ankle monitor. Following the death of King Harald V, prosecutor Ota Kartreud stated that the prosecution decided to grant Høiby special permission to attend the King’s funeral on 9 September and visit him in the hospital prior to his passing. In a shift from his previous legal stance, Høiby has since consented to continue his pretrial detention at Skaugum via electronic monitoring. His defense attorney, Petar Sekulic, stated that Høiby is consenting to continued imprisonment to avoid ‘public attention and noise’ surrounding the funeral of his grandfather. During the funeral proceedings, Høiby was observed helping to carry the coffin from the Red Salon to the Palace Chapel. This continued leniency has drawn criticism from prison reform advocates, such as Johan Lothe of the foundation Wayback, who noted that such exceptions are not typically granted to ordinary citizens. Amidst this controversy, Crown Prince Haakon has signaled support for Høiby by including him in significant royal family appearances, such as the funeral procession.
