Nothing has officially unveiled Nothing OS 5.0, a major software overhaul built on Android 17. Following an initial Community Review Program for Nothing Phone (3) owners, the company presented the final features on August 24, 2026. The update introduces over 80 changes, highlighted by a redesigned interface using the Geist typeface, a matte semi-transparent design material, and an adaptive color system that tints icons and widgets based on user wallpapers. Functional additions include a choice between “Separated” and “Combined” modes for notifications and quick settings, new lock screen clock faces such as ‘Gooey’ and ‘Micrographics’, and improved Bluetooth and Quick Share functionality. The “Essential AI” suite offers improved real-time transcription and “Smart Collections” for organizing notes and images, while a dedicated app now manages Glyph interface sounds. The open beta rollout commenced on August 26, 2026, starting with the Nothing Phone (3). Co-founder Akis Evangelidis noted that due to an overwhelming response, some users encountered download errors caused by server capacity issues rather than software bugs. By mid-September, the open beta expanded to include the Phone (4a) Pro, though certain features like the ‘Micrographics’ clock and the redesigned home screen are not yet available on that specific model. Users have been cautioned that beta versions may impact stability, battery life, and performance. The beta rollout schedule includes the Phone (4a) Pro in early September, followed by the Phone (4a), Phone (3a), and Phone (3a) Pro in late September. The Phone (2a) and Phone (2a) Plus are expected in mid-October. Stable general releases for the Phone (3) are projected to begin in mid-October and continue through early 2027. The Nothing Phone (1), Nothing Phone (2), and CMF Phone 1 will not receive the update as they have reached the end of their promised major Android version cycles.
