Novak Djokovic secured his 102nd career singles title at the China Open after Alex de Minaur retired during the final due to a left thigh injury. This victory marked Djokovic’s seventh China Open trophy and established a new professional tennis record for winning at least one ATP singles title in 21 consecutive seasons, surpassing marks held by Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Following his success in Beijing, Djokovic transitioned to the Shanghai Masters, where he suffered a significant upset in the second round. Despite holding an 8-0 head-to-head record against Hubert Hurkacz entering the tournament, Djokovic lost in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, in an 87-minute match. Hurkacz, the 2023 Shanghai champion, utilized 13 aces and 28 winners to secure his first career victory over the Serbian, breaking the previous head-to-head streak. This loss marked Djokovic’s first-ever opening match loss at this tournament. During the match, Djokovic struggled with his service and physical fatigue, stating, “I didn’t feel myself on the court,” and noting, “I wasn’t close to what I was playing in Beijing. I’m slightly more tired, not fresh.” He also remarked that the speed of the court made it “almost impossible” to return effectively when Hurkacz was serving well, adding, “If you lose your service, it is enough to lose the match, once per set, and that is what happened.” Following his victory over Djokovic, Hubert Hurkacz advanced to the round of 16 at the ATP 1000 Shanghai Masters after a three-set win (6-2, 3-6, 6-3) against China's Yi Zhou. This win allows Hurkacz to continue his strong form at the venue where he previously secured the title in 2023. This defeat impacts Djokovic's ranking and his pursuit of points for the ATP Finals in Turin.
