NSW Police Armed Response Command establishment
Overview
Following a mass shooting at a Hanukkah event near Bondi Pavilion, the New South Wales Government established the Armed Response Command (ARC). The specialized unit is designed to address evolving security threats in Sydney through high-visibility patrols at places of worship, sporting venues, and major public events.
The ARC is supported by a $94.3 million investment. At full capacity, the unit will consist of 250 officers and 28 civilian intelligence analysts. Officers receive specialist training in rifle use, tactical medical care, and armed offender response. To support operations, a 24-hour operations centre has been established in Surry Hills to provide real-time intelligence.
In conjunction with the deployment of the ARC, the state government is launching a firearm buyback scheme intended to remove reclassified and surplus weapons from the community.
