NTT Docomo infrastructure and service expansion
Overview
NTT Docomo is advancing its telecommunications infrastructure through both network expansion and specialized service platforms.
Initially, the company focused on increasing 5G coverage by planning the installation of over 10,000 base stations by the end of fiscal year 2026. This initiative aims to improve “perceived quality” and connection stability in high-traffic urban areas. A central component of this strategy is the transition to 5G Standalone (SA) architecture, with the goal of making the 5G coverage area “SA-compatible” by fiscal year 2027.
Building on this infrastructure, NTT Docomo Business is expanding its Network as a Service (NaaS) platform, “docomo business SIGN.” Scheduled updates include integrating Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) with GPU as a Service (GPUaaS) in December 2026 to support Physical AI and autonomous driving through a sovereign AI environment. Furthermore, a new “Pro” plan arriving in March 2027 will facilitate large-scale IoT management, utilizing the “SGP.32” international eSIM standard to allow for remote device management and global scalability.
In September 2026, NTT Docomo Business announced a strategic goal to reach 2.6 trillion yen in revenue by fiscal year 2030. This growth is centered on an “AI-Centric ICT Platform” targeting AI, IoT, digital BPO, and regional/SME digital transformation. To support this, the company is expanding computing capabilities via urban and container-type data centers and enhanced managed security services designed to counter machine-speed cyberattacks. Additionally, in October 2026, NTT Docomo Business and ELNET will launch “ELNET AI,” a generative AI service using licensed newspaper articles to assist corporations with information organization and report generation.
