The Nuevo Laredo City Council approved naming the city’s new Museum of Science, Technology, and Planetarium after Dr. Annie Pardo Cemo, a distinguished Mexican scientist and Emeritus Professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Spearheaded by Mayor Carmen Lilia Canturosas Villarreal, the project involved the rehabilitation of a historic elevated water tank into an educational and cultural space. Dr. Pardo Cemo, a 2022 National Science Prize winner, was selected to honor her five decades of research in biochemistry and molecular mechanisms of lung diseases. Mayor Canturosas Villarreal stated the naming aims to connect the city’s infrastructure with a figure representing “knowledge and social transformation.” Following a pre-operational phase in late September 2026—which included functional tests, staff hiring, and trial tours with local high school students—the facility was officially inaugurated by Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya and Mayor Canturosas Villarreal. The completed complex covers approximately 4,546 square meters, representing a total investment of 277.5 million pesos. The museum features a Science Pavilion, interactive exhibitions, and a central planetarium located within the former water tank that utilizes laser dome projection and a DIGISTAR system. ~~The~~ This museum is part of a ~~broader~~ larger series of ~~strategic~~ infrastructure projects ~~inaugurated~~ in ~~the region, which also included~~ Nuevo Laredo inaugurated by state and local officials, totaling over 597 million pesos.
