The Nutri-Score nutritional labeling system in France is facing increasing political and economic pressure as advocates push for its mandatory adoption. Currently, the system is voluntary, creating a divide in the food sector. Early adopters like Carrefour and Leclerc have reportedly seen increased consumer loyalty and market share for products with A or B ratings, while companies that abstain maintain nutritional opacity. A citizen petition calling for mandatory Nutri-Score labeling on all food products has surpassed 100,000 signatures on the French National Assembly’s official platform. This milestone allows the petition to be published online. The initiative is supported by numerous health and consumer organizations, including the National Academy of Medicine and various scientific societies. While previous legislative attempts to mandate the label have faced opposition—including a Senate rejection and a narrow defeat in the National Assembly—the current petition seeks to trigger a formal debate. To achieve this, the movement must reach at least 500,000 signatures from at least 30 different departments or overseas territories. Progress has moved into the legislative sphere, with the French National Assembly’s Social Affairs Commission set to examine the petition. Originally submitted in November 2025 by specialists including epidemiologist Serge Hercberg, the petition is being championed by Deputy Sandrine Runel, who is advocating for a formal debate within the commission. Furthermore, cross-party amendments have been proposed within the Social Security financing bill to support the transition toward mandatory labeling.
