On 25 July 2026, the Superior Chamber of Mexico’s Electoral Tribunal ordered that the head of the Internal Comptroller of the Oaxaca State Electoral Tribunal be a woman, overturning a prior non-binary appointment to comply with constitutional gender-parity and alternating-gender requirements. Following this, on 31 July 2026, the Oaxaca State Electoral Institute (IEEPCO) held a staff conference titled “Desigualdades y Violencia de Género.” Led by municipal women’s officials and institute councilors, the event provided tools to recognize gender-based inequality and aimed to foster a gender-responsive institutional environment. On 5 August 2026, the Electoral Tribunal of the State of Mexico (TEEM) sanctioned Juan Gabriel Salazar Martínez for financing a gender-stereotype video targeting mayoral candidate Azucena Cisneros Coss. The ruling mandated the video’s removal, an 18-day public apology, and mandatory training on gender-based political violence. On 6 August 2026, the Electoral Tribunal addressed political gender violence in Oaxaca, where federal deputy Aracely Cruz filed legal action after government secretary Jesús Romero López allegedly refused official credentials to indigenous women elected to the San Juan Mazatlán municipal council. On 11 August 2026, the Oaxaca State Congress unanimously approved measures to combat political violence against women. The legislature urged IEEPCO, the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Electoral Crimes, and political parties to implement the ‘8 de 8’ procedure for the 2026-2027 electoral cycle, which prevents individuals with histories of gender violence or unpaid alimony from seeking candidacy. The Congress also called for investigations by the Human Rights Defender of the People of Oaxaca and the Cyber Police Unit regarding digital security and human rights violations. On 14 August 2026, Deputy Tania Caballero Navarro of the Morena party called for institutional and societal unity to eradicate political violence against women.
